Q: 1998 Honda Civic EX Oil Change Intervals?
I bought my 1998 Honda Civic with about 98k miles, and it didn't come with any owner's manual. So I am not sure what is the recommended mileage for changing the oil? I know I use 5W-30 oil, cause that what it says on the oil cap. And if anyone recommends a certain brand of oil I am open for any suggestions.

A: Car manufacturers use to recommend every 3,000 miles but now some of them are saying your car can go to 5,000 miles before an oil change is needed. You can order new owners manuals for your vehicle online!

Q: how much would it cost to fix the whole front end on a 1998 honda civic EX?
I have a 1998 Honda civic Ex and it got into a car accident and basically the whole front end is needed except for the engine, how much would it be to fix it or is it even worth fixing?

A: 2 grand...prob more.

Q: Crank Shaft Position Sensor on 1998 Honda Civic?
To all you mechanics, what does it entail to install a crankshaft position sensor on a 1998 Honda Civic EX Coupe (manual transmission). I'm not planning on doing the work myself, but i got a quote from a mechanic and i'm seeing if his quote for labor is fair. He's quoting the part at $49, which checks out with the dealer and 125 for labor. Is this fair?

A: very fair. the honda flat rate time is 1.5 hours for the replacement plus another .6 for diagnosis; most shops work at between $80 and $100 per hour which would be right in the ballpark for your quote which is apparently for the replacement only and no charge for the diagnosis. hope that helps

Q: 1998 Honda Civic wont start unless I jump it!!!?
I got a 1998 Honda civic and the only way to start it is to connect jumper cables. Its a new battery and the size needed for the car. Anyone have any suggestions?

A: The next time you get your car jumped while running on idle, measure the voltage across your battery. If it reads less then 13.1 volts, then several diodes in your alternator have failed and is no longer charging your battery. So even if you have a new battery, nothing is recharging it to full capacity for you to restart your car without having to jump it. The alternator for my Civic 98 also went bad several months ago. A new alternator costs about $135 from your local auto parts store. Replacing it will require you to remove 2 volts from under your hood that hold the alternator, jack up your car, and remove the left wheel to get enough clearance to remove the alternator from underneath held by 4 or so bolts. Good luck!

Q: 1998 Honda Civic clunking noise front right end?
I have a 1998 Honda Civic that sat undriven (except for spins around the block) for several years. Last year when it started being driven regularly again, it started making a clunking noise when I went over small bumps or dips. The noise is clearly coming from the front right end of the car. I took it to a shop and they told me they "greased it up" and the noise went away. Now the noise is back. The Honda dealership said they couldn't hear anything, although I am positive it's there since I turn left and go over a dip several times a day to get to my house and always hear it. Is there a safety concern that I need to be aware of or should I just take it back to the neighborhood garage and have it greased up again? Thank you for all the quick and thorough responses. Just a couple of details--it's a 1998 but only has 32,000 miles on it since it was sitting for so long. Obviously I will have the CV boot checked out, but this problem has been going on for more than a year. It went away and now came back. It doesn't get any worse. Thank you again and if you have any further details (like a rough estimate of how much it might cost to repair), please let me know.

A: Sounds like you need a new CV joint to me. If you don't replace the CV joint it will get progressively worse. The classic sign of a bad CV joint is a CONSTANT "ticking" or as you say "clunking" as you drive. The sound may get louder or even decrease only as you turn corners. A bad CV joint can be potentially dangerous while driving since it is there to stablize each wheel. Each side has a CV joint. The worst case scenario is that without that stabilization, your wheel will eventually start to wobble and DISPLACE while driving. Not good. Dangerous.

Q: What is a good body kit for a 1998 honda civic while still maintaining good ground clearance?

Q: How can I unwind the radio aerial in my 1998 Honda Civic? I don't see any button to do that.?
The radio aerial of my Honda Civic 1998 has got damaged as a result of machine wash because I did not know how to unwind it. Does anyone know how can I unwind it? I don't see any button inside to do the job.

A: I think that these cars had a manual antenna. This means that you had to pull it out yourself (at least in the US), so there would be no button to do so. If you want to replace it, you should just have to undo a couple screws and put in the new antenna.

Q: Premium gas in a 1998 Honda Civic?
I just filled up the tank of my 1998 Honda Civic with Premium gas instead of Regular like it recommends. Will this decrease the performance of my car and make it run worse? This is ONLY a one time deal. I won't ever put Premium in my car again.

A: No, putting a higher octane gas in an engine than it calls for will not hurt it. Just keep in mind that it won't do anything for the engine either. You will not get an increase in performance or anything like that.

Q: what type of gas for 1998 Honda Civic EX?
i bought a used 1998 Honda Civic EX and it didnt come with an owner's manual so can someone tell me what grade of gasoline does it take? just to be clear, the owner's manual calls for 87 octane??

A: All it needs is regular unleaded, 87 Octane. Edit: yes, the owner's manual calls for 87 octane.

Q: 1998 Honda civic hard to start in the morning part 2?
My 98 1.6L 170,000 miles LX (d16Y7) civic seems to take twiceas long to start in the morning. I change the batterylast month(14.5 volt while car running, Change sparkplugs, new air filter, new fuel filter, new pcv valvelast week. Replaced wires, cap, rotor last year they look ok and measure within spec. I even use fuel injector cleaner does not seem to help the problem. I also notice that a trace of coolant under the distributor so I change out the heater hose and problem did not go away. That a sensor with one wire on it. What is this sensor anyway? Could that be the problem. I see somemoisture on the wiring boot too. The car drives normal in the afternoon when I leave work. It starts up right away! The engine sounds normal and runs at 34MPG . What can be wrong? Any info will be great. Thanks in advance!

A: have the starter tested

Q: What car is better: a 1995 Nissan 240sx or a 1998 Honda civic ex?
I personnally own a 1995 240sx. The only bad thing about it is that it tends to "drift" around in the rainny weather when i make sharp turns. But i think Honda civics look nicer when you add the bodykits.

A: um i'm not sure of nissan's, i don't know anything about them. but i do know that a honda civic has great gas mileage and will last a long time. for me it's whichever is cheaper on the gas bill (think about it...you're going to be driving it for years....hundreds/thousands of tank fills. It will make a difference in the long run), whichever is known to breakdown less (cheaper in the long run), and whichever lasts longer. (Once again, cheaper in the long run). If I was a millionaire, it would be speed, speed, speed!

Q: 1998 Honda Civic whines when turning in reverse?
I have a 1998 Honda Civic with 112,500 miles. In the past month (start of Nov), when I have backed out of parking spaces I have heard a noticible whine coming from the car when driving in reverse and turning my steering wheel more than 45(?) degrees (about 75% to the point where I couldn't turn the wheel anymore). Other quarks that appeared around the same time as my whine problem: In the morning when the temps dip below 20 degrees my turn signals won't work until after the car has warmed up (about 5 minutes) I activate the turn signal and it doesn't click, I try it again and it barely works At hwy speeds (65+ MPH) ocassionally I hear a rattling vibration from my drivers side roughly under the hood that lasts for about a minute. It could just be my imagination but I think it occurs when I switch lanes What has changed: Winter tempatures have been the norm (30s) in the last month Got new tires in begining of Oct New steep sharp turn entryway in Nov What is could this be?

A: My wife whines when she's cold too. Don't matter how fast she's going .

Q: 1998 Honda Civic. How much would it be cost to fix the radiator and a blown gasket on the car?
The car was overheating so we went to a tires plus and we were quoted the amount of $2k. The labor is the part that kills us, but is that a normal estimate?

A: That's not unreasonable for the work they're doing. The problem is Hondas aren't easy to fix, and you're talking about major engine work here. A blown cylinder head gasket by itself is probably $1,500.00 to fix. You may be able to save money if you can find a local mom-and-pop mechanic with a good reputation that works on Hondas. Avoid the dealership at all costs -- they charge top-dollar and do crappy work.
